1. First set of post-worthy sketches. Working straight in pen (except that weird horned dragon guy in the top corner, who I photoshopped in from a different page. I lightly penciled him first).

I have to say, I already feel more relaxed! I’m just letting my pen or pencil do the thinking for me. No ideas, no plans, and no goals except to draw some lines that look vaguely like something.

Personally, I really enjoy that strange black worm dragon. He’s kind of cute, but doesn’t seem friendly either.

I think trying to draw a specific thing for a long period of time just isn’t my cup of tea. Doing studies is great and illustrating specific subject matter can be fun too, but my favorite thing is to work completely without reference and in a somewhat automatic style. I certainly don’t get the same sort of anatomical accuracy and such when I work this way, but that isn’t my goal for these particular works. It’s a pure release of energy.

Actually, I think my mind is a bit quieter in the evening after I do a bit of sketching. It must get crowded in there or something. haha!
